Blackmagic Design announces new Pocket Cinema Camera 6K

Though not the first camera under $3000 to feature internal 6K video recording capabilities, the Blackmagic Pocket Cinema Camera 6K is sure to be popular among beginner filmmakers. To achieve the higher resolution, Blackmagic built the new camera around a 6144×3456 Super 35-size sensor, capable of 13 stops of dynamic range. For comparison, the Pocket Cinema Camera 4K is only able to record at a max bitrate of 203mb/s while the new Pocket Cinema Camera 6K can record at bitrates up to 483mb/s.

The other major upgrade — a Canon EF mount — is a huge plus for all the Canon shooters out there. With the increased size of the sensor, a larger lens is necessary to cover it all, and inclusion of the Canon EF mount lets users advantage of the expansive array of EF-mount lenses available.

Being able to record 4K/60fps is a breeze for the BPCC6K; it can actually record 6K footage at 60fps, though with the ultrawide aspect ratio of 2.4:1.

Otherwise, the 6K retains similar controls, form factor, and features as the 4K Micro Four Thirds model. This means you get dual native ISO up to 25,600, 3D LUT support, a large, bright 5″ screen, and professional audio support with four microphones, as well as all the same ports and media features.

Price-wise, the BPCC6K will sell well under $3000 at $2495. It comes without a lens but like its 4K little sibling, includes an activation key for Davinci Resolve Studio. Preorders for the Pocket Cinema Camera 6K are live now and it will begin shipping August 16.

With this surprise release, Blackmagic has certainly thrown the gauntlet down for all upcoming video-focused cameras released by Sony, Canon, and others. Many people will be deciding between this and the Sony a7siii when it is released, so you know for sure Sony is paying attention.
