Canon announces the EOS RP full-frame mirrorless camera

Aggressively priced at $1299 for just the body only, the new Canon EOS RP packs a lot for its relatively low price and compact size. Features include:

  • 26.2MP full-frame CMOS sensor
  • DIGIC 8 image processor
  • 3.0″ vari-angle touchscreen
  • 4K/24fps video
  • Dual Pixel AF (not during 4K recording)

Like its bigger brother the EOS R, the new Canon EOS RP fails to utilize the entire full-frame sensor for 4K video and instead introduces a 1.7x crop factor. Because of this, the Nikon Z6 or Sony a7iii are likely a better deal for users more concerned with video, even with their $2000 price tags. For under $1500 and with its small footprint, you can bet the EOS RP will be popular among travel photographers and videographers as well as those looking for a cheap entry into the world of full frame photography.

The Canon EOS RP will begin shipping February 27 and is available to preorder now for $1299 by itself or for $2199 with the new 24-105mm RF lens.
