Meet the Insta360 ONE R: The world’s first modular action camera

Popular 360° camera maker Insta360 dipped their toe into the action cam market this past summer with the super-tiny Insta360 GO, but with the release of the new Insta360 One R, they have jumped fully in.

The new One R is unlike any action camera we’ve seen to date due to its modular design.

Depending on what you need, the One R can either be a simple 4K action cam, a dual-lens 360° camera with screen, or the world’s first 5.3K capable, 1-inch sensor action cam.

Changing between the different models is as easy as swapping out one of the three waterproof mods and attaching a different one to the battery base and core.

An added bonus of this design is that the display is also reversible, so if you need to frame up a selfie-shot just flip the core around so the screen faces you.

Price and Performance

The Insta360 One R will start off at $299 for the 4K Action Camera Edition.

This puts it well below the GoPro 8 and DJI Osmo Action but features very comparable specs — 4K/60fps video, 6-axis stabilization, 100mbps video bitrate, and HDR photo/video.

Next up in price is technically the 360 Edition which will be available for $429 (it’s currently out of stock), but it looks like Insta360 is pushing customers towards the Twin Edition bundle which is only $50 more at $479 and comes with both the Dual Lens 360 Mod and 4K Wide-Angle Mod.

Judging by how Insta360 is marketing it and the price, this bundle will likely be the most popular one people go with — after all, if you strictly wanted a 360° camera it’d be cheaper to go with the older Inst360 ONE X.

The Twin Edition bundle includes all the capabilities of the 4K Action Camera but adds 5.7K dual lens recording, the renowned FlowState stabilization, and several modes that utilize the 360° video to achieve cool effects like TimeShift, AutoFrame & ShotLab.

And if you spend a little more money on accessories you can unlock even cooler effects like Bullet Time or Invisible Drone.

Finally, there is the 1-Inch Edition for $549 which was co-engineered with Leica.

This has most of the same features as the 4K Action Camera Edition (it oddly lacks HDR video and 200fps slow-mo) but with improved image quality thanks to the 1-inch, 5.7K/19MP sensor.

All of the models are waterproof down to 5m (16.4ft).

WiFi and Bluetooth are also included for connecting to your smartphone or recording wireless audio via AirPods.

Availability

The Insta360 ONE R is available to preorder now from Insta360.com and B&H Photo.

The 4K Camera Edition and Twin Edition bundle are estimated to begin shipping in 7 days while the rest won’t ship for three weeks.
