Meet the MOZA Slypod: The monopod that’s also a camera slider

Gudsen MOZA has become increasingly well known for making high quality, affordable 3-axis gimbals over the past couple of years. There current lineup of products includes everything from smartphone gimbals to pro level gimbals that can hold small cinema cameras. Now it looks like they might be shaking up the industry again — releasing a revolutionary, category-straddling product that opens a world of possibilities for videographers.

The MOZA Slypod is at its essence a monopod. However, its secret is the electronics it hides within which motorize this typically static piece of gear. Gudsen MOZA claims the unique design of the motor drive system was inherited from the precise drive technology used by the Mars Rover. This gives it incredible lifting strength for its size. Though only weighing 2.2lbs, the Slypod can handle 26.5lbs when used horizontally like a slider and 39.7lbs when used vertically like a monopod. This is more than enough for most DSLRs or mirrorless cameras.

The sliding action of the monopod can be controlled via the MOZA App or the optional Remote Handunit. Control parameters include the telescopic length, sliding speed and programmable motion time-lapse. Due to the design of the motor system and control algorithms, even the most demanding shots can be repeated with perfect precision and smoothness.

The Slypod features a built-in battery with USB Type-C charging. MOZA claims users can expect about 2 hours of use per charge. This is a bit low when compared to dedicated motorized sliders, but considering the Slypod’s lightweight design it’s understandable. And for longer shoots, connecting any standard USB external battery pack to the Slypod will easily extend its use.

Carbon fiber construction and a weatherproof design help make the Slypod perfect for taking on the go. No word yet on overall length of the monopod or whether it will eventually be available in different lengths.

Gudsen MOZA is currently focused on promoting their new AirCross 2 Gimbal which they are showing-off alongside the Slypod at NAB 2019. Price will be somewhere between $500-$800 and we should see it become available early summer 2019.
