When it comes to high-quality audio gear that is well designed and not ridiculously expensive, RØDE is the way to go. And now they are bringing their expertise to the area of wireless audio recording with their latest product: the Wireless GO.
Let’s face it, no one likes dealing with hundreds of feet of XLR cables in order to record proper audio. However, up until now wireless audio gear has been fairly expensive and somewhat clunky. Even RØDE’s popular RODELINK Filmmaker Kit costs over $350, weighs 1.25lbs and uses annoying AA batteries. Sennheiser’s XSW-D Wireless Plug-On Mic System (released earlier this year) did a lot to simplify and modernize the traditional design of wireless mic systems. It features a sleek new look, is rechargeable via USB Type-C and weighs less than .75lbs. Still, it costs $300 or more and stays with the same tried and true approach — receiver, transmitter & lavalier mic.
RØDE has addressed all of these issues with their new Wireless GO compact wireless microphone system. Available for $199 starting April 18, it is priced for consumers though its feature-set will likely make it enticing for professionals as well.
Extreme portability
First off, the system is incredibly compact. One can easily pocket both the transmitter and receiver and combined they weigh about the same as $2.25 in quarters (2.2oz). This makes the Wireless GO system extremely versatile — enabling users to bring high quality wireless audio with them wherever they go.
Don’t let the small size fool you though, the Wireless GO packs some serious specs. Internal lithium-ion polymer batteries give the TX and RX up to 7 hours of battery life each while USB Type-C charging ports allow them to be recharged fully in just 2 hours. Just like Rode’s RODELink wireless systems, the Wireless GO system utilizes the 2.4 GHz frequency band. This makes connecting a breeze — literally just power on and go — but can lead to interference when trying to record in areas with lots of Wifi routers, smartphones, and other tech that uses 2.4 GHz for wireless communications. RØDE is also promising a range of nearly 230′ in uncongested environments.
No lav mic? No problem
The biggest bonus feature of the Wireless GO system is the transmitter’s built-in microphone. This means that if you don’t have a lav mic you can simply clip the transmitter to your subject’s clothing and be ready to roll. The built-in mic is no slouch either. Its omnidirectional pickup pattern and 50 Hz to 20 kHz frequency range will give you broadcast quality audio even with less than ideal mic placement.
Already have an external lav? The transmitter also packs in a 3.5mm TRS input that works with most 3.5mm jack-equipped lavalier microphones. Simply plug your lav mic into the Wireless GO and the system functions like a traditional bodypack system.
The road to better audio
Audio is often the most overlooked part of filmmaking for those just starting out. It can be complicated, expensive and adds a whole other layer of complexity to video productions. RØDE’s Wireless Go addresses almost all of these potential issues; simplifying the process of recording good audio while also lowering the bar for entry. Whether you’re a vlogger or amatuer documentary filmmaker, the Wireless GO will be a great addition to your gear bag.
