Mavic Mini release causes Skydio 2 preorders to spike

DJI’s release of the Mavic Mini has been met with fairly positive reviews. For just $399 it packs a lot — 30min battery, 4km range, 2.7k video — all while still weighing in under 249g.

However, it looks like some people hoping for DJI to release a more prosumer oriented drone. And with DJI unlikely to release another drone this year, have turned towards the Skydio 2.

According to Skydio CEO Adam Bry, the reservation rate for the Skydio 2 has increased since the Mavic Mini was announced. This is somewhat counterintuitive and most likely not what DJI would have liked to see. Remember, it was the strategically rushed release of DJI’s Mavic Pro back in 2016 that crushed GoPro’s recently launched Karma drone.

Adam Bry tweet "Interestingly our reservation rate has increased since the Mavic Mini was announced, in spite of a long wait time for new reservation placers."

While the Mavic Mini is not intended to compete with Skydio 2, it looks like it indirectly might have a large effect on its adoption and success. Skydio is promising orders will start shipping as promised in mid-November making the Skydio 2 the hot drone to get this holiday season. Stay tuned here for a full review upon its release.

You can reserve your spot inline to order the Skydio 2 (current wait times put shipping dates at Q2 of 2020, though that could drop) by heading over to Skydio.com. A $100 refundable deposit is required.
